Safari Itinerary

Day 1 Chameleon Guesthouse & Backpackers, Windhoek
Upon arrival into Windhoek collect your vehicle and drive to Chameleon Guesthouse, here you'll meet a tour consultant to go through your travel plans, hand over your welcome pack and asnwer any last minute questions you may have. Depending on the time of arrival perhaps wander into the city centre, or relax by the pool. You may choose to join an optional township tour, a sunset horse ride, or even head out for a birding trip.

Day 2 & 3 Desert Camp, near Namib Naukluft National Park
Enjoy stunning scenery on the drive to Desert Camp located just a few kms from the entry to the famous dunes of Sossusvei, this afternoon relax by the pool and later drive to nearby Elim's Dune for sunset. The following day rise early to enter the park for sunrise and from here drive to the dunes fields - the first 60km is on tar road to the 2x4 car park. The final section is for 4x4 vehicles only and we recommend you walk this (5km) or take the NWR shuttle service (unless you are an experienced 4x4 sand driver we do not recommend you drive.) From your base explore the Sossusvlei dunes and surrounding area - climb a dune for amazing views and run down the other side.... A visit to Dead Vlei is a must for it's white pan, ancient camel thorn trees and apricot dunes set against a clear blue sky.

Day 4-6 An Der Mole Self Catering Apartment , Swakopmund
Drive through the desert to Swakopmund, once at the coast visit Walvis Bay - a RAMSAR wetland site and numerous birds including greater and lesser flamingos, pelicans and the endemic Damara tern reside. From here it's a short drive to Swakopmund, where you will be based in centrally based self-catering apartment for the next three nights. There's plenty of time to join optional activities such as a marine cruise and experience the thrill of dolphins leaping out of the water along the boat and feed seals by hand and enjoy fresh oysters and champagne on the cruise - a great activity for the family to enjoy. Alternatively enjoy a highly recommended day trip to Sandwich Harbour or perhaps a scenic flight over the dunes and coastline where you will see dunes falling into the ocean, a shipwreck 200m inland and of course, the dunes of Sossusvlei region. For the more adventurous and young at heart, there is also sand boarding, quad biking, kayaking, and a plethora of other activities, all of which can be booked in advance for your convenience. There is a safe beach for swimming, an interesting aquarium and museum or you may want to sit back and relax with a coffee and cake and watch the world go by, pick up fresh supplies and plan for your next section of the journey.

Day 7 & 8 Grootberg Lodge, Northern Damaraland
It's a long day's drive but full of things to see and experience so we recommend departure immediately after breakfast. Drive north along the Skeleton Coast, perhaps stop at a battered shipwreck south of Henties Bay, past Cape Cross and from here enter the Skeleton Coast Park and get a feel of this hostile and remote region passing remains of diamond and oil mining before turning inland to the dramatic landscapes of Damaraland and onto Grootberg Lodge. A great lodge where you can enjoy activities such as desert elephant tracking and black rhino tracking, along with horse riding, walking and visiting a local Himba community

Day 9 & 10 Okaukuejo/Halali, Etosha National Park
Onward to Etosha, one of the best game reserves in Southern Africa and home to many species of game including liom, cheeatah, leopard, elephant, hyena, giraffe, and many types of antelope including the endemic black faced impala. You will be based in the park for two nights and each rest camp has its own swimming pool, floodlit waterhole, shop and restaurant. The is time to enjoy game drives in your vehicle visiting various waterholes and searching for the many species of game, during the heat of the day perhaps relax by the pool. During the evening it's worth sitting by the floodlit waterhole to see what animals come to drink in the twilight hours.

Day 11 Frans Indongo Lodge, Otjiwarongo
After a final game drive out of park continue your journey towards Otjiwarongo and overnight at Frans Indongo Lodge, situated on a private reserve, here you can join an optional game drive to see unusual species such as black and white rhino, black springbok, roan, blesbok and the rare nyala.

Day 12 Erindi Private Game Reserve

This lodge has huge amount of game and each room overlooks a waterhole - you may be lucky to see rhino or other game coem to drink. Perhaps enjoy a sundowner drink on the wooden deck overlooking another waterhole that has resident hippo and crocodiles - unusual to see this far south in the country and one of the few opportunities you will have to see these incredible animals. The reserve is home to species such as elephant, lion and leopard, various plains game as well as the endangered cheetah and wild dog. There is also a games room, and swimming pool for the family to enjoy and arrangements can be made for kids to be cared for whilst parents are on game drives if required.
