The start of this adventure takes us from Arusha to the beautiful and diverse Tarangire and Lake Manyara areas. We enjoy captivating game drives in Tarangire searching for large herds of elephants and migratory wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest and eland gather and not surprisingly the predators follow. This is also the one place in Tanzania where dry–country antelope such as oryx and gerenuk are regularly spotted. Enjoy further wildlife experiences in Manyara, a magnificent landscape of acacia woodlands, water forests, baobab strewn cliffs, algae–streaked hot springs, swamps and the lake itself. The park supports 400 species of bird, and the largest concentration of baboons anywhere in the world. Other species include giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, impala, waterbuck, warthog, the Cape clawless otter, and Egyptian mongoose
Heading further into northern Tanzania we journey to the fascinating soda and salt lake of Lake Natron, the only regular breeding area in East Africa for around 2.5m lesser flamingos, this is a beautiful spectacle to behold on the lake. There is free time to explore the area – look out for the hominid footprint, hike to the waterfalls, do a little bird watching or relax in natural plunge pools by camp
Onto one of the most famous parks of all – the Serengeti, our next nights are spent in this beautiful and vast area, the first night in the northern section with its gently rolling landscapes – enjoy game drives looking for gazelles, predators including lion and leopard, hyena and jackals, and of course the vast numbers of plains game – the Serengeti is home to more than 3 million animals
Onward to the central Serengeti for 2 further nights and to the heart of the park where you’ll find plenty of animals year–round. Note that camps may vary seasonally to ensure we encounter the best game–viewing opportunities during the Great Wildebeest Migration, where up to 1.25million wildebeest trek in columns of up to 40km long in search for fresh grazing as they make a circular route. Though the Serengeti is most famous for the migration, there are plenty of resident animals and the region offers busy year–round game viewing. On day 7, perhaps also take part in an optional hot–air ballooning trip – see this great animal spectacle from an “birds–eye” view
En–route to Ngorongoro, we stop at Olduvai Gorge, famed for being the “Cradle of Mankind” where some of the oldest hominid remains were found dating as far back as 1.8m years ago – more recent discoveries have found remains that date as far back as 3.7m years. From here we head onward to the World Heritage Site of Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and the chance for spectacular game viewing in the crater itself – there’s a chance of spotting the Big 5 here, a huge variety of birds, a stunning backdrop and superb way to finish your safari. This famous location is on most peoples’ bucket list due to its natural beauty and abundance of diverse wildlife
Return to Arusha today where your safari comes to an end.
