Meet your fellow travellers and crew in PE and our first destination will be to Addo Elephant Park, famed not only for the elephants after which the park was named but for the unique vegetation and diversity. It is now the 3rd largest park in SA and this afternoon we head out on a game drive to see what animals we can spot. There is an abundance of wildlife including the Big 5
Nestled in the heartland of the Great Karoo is the historic and fourth oldest town in the country known as Graaff–Reinet, and we explore learning about the history of this arid region from ancient fossils, local heritage sites and beautiful Cape Dutch architecture. This evening we join a sun–downer trip to the Valley of Desolation and enjoy the stunning panoramic views of the plains stretching out below
Today we cross the border into land–locked and autonomous mountain kingdom of Lesotho, climbing our way to our destination set high in the hills and mountains. We explore the mountains on foot and visit a village where we can meet with some of the Basotho people learning about their community and traditions – they’re famous for their hats, blankets and sturdy ponies. These infamous ponies are renowned for their surefootedness and you can enjoy an optional pony trek in the mountains heading up and down the steep tracks enjoying the beautiful views .
Leaving Lesotho, we travel through the sandstone cliffs of Golden Gate making our way to the Drakensburg Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where we spend our next two nights. We can enjoy hikes in this stunning area and include a trek to Battle Cave a renowned area with ancient San paintings.
We leave the mountains behind as we drive to the coastline, stopping en–route at a famous site along the way. On 5 August 1962, police waved down a car on a lonely road in KwaZulu–Natal. At the wheel was Nelson Mandela. He was arrested and spent 27 years in prison and we take in this site and reflect. From here make our way to Howick Falls for a photo stop and onto the bustling city of Durban where your tour comes to an end.
