When To Go To South Africa
With a country the size of South Africa, exposed to different oceans and currents, it's no surprise that the climate changes from region to region.  This is a general guideline only!

The country has a varied climate that ranges from sub tropical heat and humidity on the low veld and much of the east coast, through to the temperate high lands.  It can become very hot and dry in the semi-desert west - the Kalahari, Kglahadi, and regions south of Namibia (Karoo).  These regions can feel unbearable in summer but at least don't have the humid conditions of the east coast, while Cape summers are often hot and dry (similar to the areas north of the region).

Average summer temperatures range from 26c in high lands to 30c or more in the low lands and western Cape.  The Karoo and Kgladhadi/Kalahari have melting temperatures of around 40c so it is often worth considering other times of year to visit these places.

Winters - May to August are mild and dry (normally!) though the desert areas have the reverse by way of summer temperatures and can plummet to freezing or below at night, though day times are pleasant.  Snow and frost isn't unusual in the high country and in mountain regions such as the Drakkensberg it's common - don't forget there is an albeit small, ski region in the country.  The Western Cape has a mediterranean climate with dry summers, and mild, wet winters.

Note that the South Africans take their holidays over Christmas through to the New Year and at  Easter (usual holiday periods worldwide) so prices rise and availability is limited so try to avoid these times if you are after a bargain or want to avoid big crowds.

Remember 2010 - FIFA WORLD CUP - to anyone that isn't a football (soccer) fan - it's that time that occurs every 4 years - June/July 2010 will be very busy with escalating prices so unless you are coming out for the sport it's probably advisable to avoid these months to an alternative time or visit neighbouring countries such as Namibia and Botswana if your dates can't be changed.
