7 Day Namibia In a Nutshell Self Drive

A terrific short self drive for adventure style campers and those with limited time available to see Etosha and the dunes of Sossusvlei - just remember Namibia is a big country and distances for drives can be long.

Day 1 & 2                       Sesriem, Campsite
Upon arrival at the airport you will collect your vehicle and drive South-west to Sesriem. Take pleasure in the beautiful scenery en route to Sesriem and view the mountains changing into fascinating colours. Depending on the time of your arrival you may choose to relax by the pool or take a stroll to the nearby Sossusvlei lodge to wine and dine. Overnight is based camping. All your meals will be on your own expense. Recommend you drive to the Sesriem gate in the darkness when the gate opens to witness first light and shadows on the sand dunes before arriving at the heart of the famous sand dune sea of Namibia.  You may watch the sunrise from this spectacular and unique area (dependent on opening time of inner park gate). You may choose to head up a dune close to Sossusvlei then walk to Dead Vlei with its large expanse of bleached cracked clay and skeletal camel thorn trees scattered around, contrasting with a backdrop of huge orange-red dunes that make for superb photographic opportunities. Perhaps enjoy a mid morning brunch after exploring this dramatic and desolate landscape before returning to camp for a swim and this afternoon explore nearby Sesriem Canyon on foot.  Enjoy another spectacular sunset surrounded by this colourful desert and sleep under the bright stars of the southern hemisphere. Overnight is based camping only.  All meals will be at your own expense. Approx 5 hours drive.

Day 3             Bed and Breakfast Guesthouse Swakopmund

Recommend a morning departure from the campsite stopping at Solitaire before continuing through the desert with its endless views across the pastel-coloured gravel plains to the port town of Walvis Bay.  You may choose to visit the lagoon, which is a protected RAMSAR wetland site, where we may see the many species of birds including Greater and Lesser Flamingos, pelicans, avocets, plovers, the endemic Damara Tern as well as a visit to the nearby salt farm.   Continue your drive to the quaint town of Swakopmund, full of historic buildings and where you may book optional adventure activities such as sand boarding, quad biking, scenic flights, parachuting, dolphin cruises as well as a highly recommended day trip to Sandwich Harbour, a natural lagoon where you will be driven over sand dunes. Overnight is based in twin room with en suite facilities on a bed and breakfast basis. Lunch and dinner will be at own expense. Approx 5 hours drive.

Day 4 - 6                     Etosha National Park

Your destination is Etosha. You’ll spend the next three days enjoying game drives in this premier park, one of the largest and best reserves in Africa.  Etosha is over 22,000 sq kms and home to many species of game including lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, hyena, giraffe as well as antelope and over 340 species of birds so should keep you amused.  Evenings spent around the floodlit waterhole watching the game come to quench their thirst.  This park is recognised as one of the best game parks in Southern Africa for the numbers and various species of game as well as the interesting geology.   Each of the rest camps has a swimming pool, bar, restaurant and small shop, meals at own expense.  Overnight is based camping. All your meals will be on your own expense. Approx 4 hours drive

Day 7                                     Flight

Today you will drive back to Windhoek. You may choose to stop over in Okahandja, which is a small town en route to Windhoek that sells a wide variety of crafts and art, before driving back to Windhoek. Depending on the time of your flight you can enjoy a Katutura Township tour, to educate yourself on Namibia’s History and to interact with its people. Here you will visit the township and its shopping area. You will also visit the single courter’s where the locals sell their meat please feel free to taste some.  From here return to Windhoek and drive to the airport to drop off your vehicle and to connect with your onward flight. Approx 5-6 hours drive.
