Honeymoon in Namibia
12 Day - Camping Self Drive

With wide-open spaces, incredible night skies, fantastic game viewing and stunning landscapes Namibia is a great honeymoon destination.  This camping trip is geared to those wanting to discover the magic of Namibia and enjoy “together” time whilst exploring the country.

Day 1 Chameleon Guesthouse, Windhoek

Upon arrival at the airport you will collect your vehicle and drive 40kms to Windhoek, the capital city. Depending on the time of arrival you will have free time to relax by the pool or wander around the city, alternatively you may wish to join a township tour taking you into the Katatura region where you can meet the locals, sample local foods and visit a shebeen. Overnight is based in our honeymoon room with private balcony and en suite facilities. Dinner at one of the many restaurants at your own expense – Joe’s Beer House is recommended for the serious meat eater. Bed and breakfast basis.

Day 2-3 Sesriem

Enjoy stunning scenery on the drive to Sesriem, the main campsite and entry to the famous sand dunes of Sossusvlei. You can relax by the swimming pool, take a walk to the nearby Elim’s Dune for sunset and the following day rise early to venture into the dune fields. If you have a 4x4 you can drive all the way into Sossusvlei, if not you will need to walk the last section or take a private shuttle service. If you are lucky and Namibia has received excellent rains you may find water in Sossusvlei and enjoy seeing a lake in the desert. Ensure you visit nearby Dead Vlei, where the ancient and skeletal camel thorn trees stand on the white pan with the backdrop of orange sand dunes and blue sky, a photographers delight. Return to camp, you may wish to visit the nearby Sesriem Canyon. There is also a lodge nearby that offers horse riding for sunset – if you would like more details please ask. Camping only.

Day 4 Swakopmund
From here drive north crossing the Kuiseb Canyon and onward through the desert with its endless vistas across the plains. You can stop at Walvis Bay to visit the lagoon – a protected RAMSAR site to see flamingos, pelicans and the endemic damara tern, you can also make a short stop at the salt works, one of the major export industries in the country before heading up the coastline to Swakopmund and relax or you may wish to join in an optional activity. Swakopmund is a bustling little town and is the main coastal town in Namibia. The architecture is interesting – many of the houses and buildings are of a colonial style and offer a good selection of shops, restaurants and cafes. This afternoon enjoy a scenic flight over the dunes and desert area, over a shipwreck and past dunes falling into the ocean. This gives an entirely different perspective to the area you have visited on land. (Activity has been included in the price based on min of 4 people flying). Accommodation is located on the edge of town and just a few minutes walk from the centre. Each of the chalets is of wooden construction and set on stilts with views across the river mouth and onto the ocean, we’ll book the honeymoon room that offers privacy and splendid views. Bed and breakfast basis.

Day 5 Swakopmund
Enjoy a free day – you can choose if you wish to take part in one of the many optional activities such as tandem skydiving, sand boarding, quad biking, a township tour where you are able to chat to the locals, enjoy a dolphin cruise or fishing trip, the choice is extensive. Alternatively there is also a day trip to Sandwich Harbour, a natural lagoon, this trip comes highly recommended and can be booked in advance if you wish. There is horse riding in the Swakop valley from an hour and a half for sunset in the moon landscape or longer rides for the more experienced. You may just choose to visit the museums or wander along the beach. Lunch and dinner at clients own expense. Overnight as above.

Day 6 Twyfelfontein

This morning depart from Swakopmund, recommend you drive along part of the Skeleton Coast and visit the Cape Cross seal colony where thousands of seals congregate on the beach. From here turn inland into Damaraland and Twyfelfontein is set between the Ugab and Huab Rivers in a vast and unspoilt wilderness area of desert, unique geological formations and amazing flora and fauna. Here, you can take a local guide and visit one of the largest rock etching collections in Southern Africa. The camp is located close to a dry riverbed where you can look out for the elusive desert elephant.

Day 7-8 Grootberg Lodge
This morning you can enjoy a leisurely breakfast or getaway early to visit the surrounding area. The Twyfelfontein area is famous as the home to the ancient rock etchings - a world heritage site, Burnt Mountain and the Organ Pipes. You can then begin your drive to Grootberg. Grootberg Lodge is situated on top of the flat-topped plateau with commanding views across the valley. The following day you will have the chance to enjoy rhino tracking in the valley. Black rhinos were relocated in 2006 from the Kunene Region by the government and Save The Rhino Trust. The animals have settled into the environment well and recordings need to be taken and the animals regularly monitored. You will be able to track the vehicles with telemetry equipment and when located, walk to get a closer experience of them before returning to the lodge later. Dinner, bed and breakfast and rhino tracking is included. You will be based here for two nights.

Day 9-10 Etosha National Park

An early departure from the lodge to arrive at the rest camp around lunchtime, you may wish to stop at Outjo for fresh supplies and coffee and cake along the way before entering the park and game driving to Okaukuejo, the main rest camp. Spend the evening around the floodlit waterhole watching the animals come in to quench their thirst, this is often a busy waterhole and may species flock here after sunset including the black rhino. During the days in the park it’s always worth getting up early and heading in search of the wildlife early in the morning when much of it is active and later in the afternoon using the day time to transit across the park or relax by the pools. Each rest camp has a floodlit waterhole, bar, restaurant and swimming pool. Camping only.

Day 11 Okonjima Main Camp – AfriCat Foundation
After a leisurely breakfast depart for Okonjima. The AfriCat Foundation is based here and is devoted the conservation of predators specifically cheetah and leopard with the aim to ease the conflict of interests that arises between humans and carnivores. A large part of their work is in animal welfare – rehabilitating and relocating animals, which have been causing problems in their home territory and providing refuge and veterinary care for injured or orphaned animals. This afternoon we will have close encounters with large predators such as cheetah and leopard and get some excellent photo opportunities. Overnight is based in main camp. The main lapa has the reception and curio shop along with the bar, lounge and dining area, and the swimming pool and self-guided walks are close by. Dinner, brunch and one activity is included.

Day 12 Flight
This morning you may wish to join another activity and it's generally a visit to the educational centre to learn more about their projects and also see the cheetah "up close and personal", (optional extra).  You may wish to enjoy a "bushman trail" walk, track radio-collared cheetah by foot or alternatively, you can return to Windhoek for some last minute shopping before driving to the airport in time for your onward flight
