Search for Desert Elephant Horse Riding Safari (2-5 days)

Located in Damaraland this is a shorter riding trip searching for Desert Elephant.  It can added to another itinerary, for clients on a self-drive trip through Namibia, or for those with a short time available transfers to/from Windhoek can be arranged.  The following is a guideline and the ride can be 1-4 nights.

Elephant tracking on horseback

Day 1  Horse ride sleep out, Damaraland
Guests will need to arrive just after breakfast, (or alternatively we can arrange accommodation for the night before) then you’ll meet your new horse, saddle up and ride out in search of the desert-adapted elephant.  We’ll stop and enjoy a packed lunch in the shade of a big tree in some forgotten waterway in the wilderness.  We’ll reach camp by sunset in time for cold drinks, hot showers and fireside tales of bravado in the face of massive pachyderms (that’s elephants) viewed at point blank range from the saddle of a plunging steed.  OK, so they were carthorses bought by the lodge from the locals in the area and they don't plunge but we were just starting to get on a roll and enjoy ourselves.  We will visit villages along the way, meeting locals and seeing how they live today – they also will give us up-to-date information on where the elephants may be located.   Dinner under the stars and sleep under canvas in tents and all equipment provided.

Days 2-3  Horse ride sleep out, Damaraland
Resume the safari life style, breakfast around the fire, morning ride tracking elephant’s.  Lunch back at camp, some down time to relax or read a book, tea and coffee afternoon ride, sundowners, campfire chronicles.  In Damaraland we only shift camp every second day as we have endless options for riding in all directions, through varied terrain and spend on average 7 hours a day in the saddle.  We’ll still enjoy different locations for lunch and on occasion have come across rhino spoor in one of the regions so you never know – we could be lucky and not only see elephant’s but black rhino as well.   Naturally, the wine and stories will continue to flow

Day 4
 Grootberg Lodge
Ride back to the Grootberg Lodge, arriving late afternoon.  Time for a long deserved hot shower and a final posh dinner at the lodge and sleep the sleep of the worn out in luxury.
