Quiver Tree at Fish River Canyon

Fish River Canyon
Located in the Ai-Ais / Richtersveld Transfrontier Park, the Fish River Canyon is one of the largest canyons in the world. Around 160 km in length and reaching a depth in excess of 500 meters, it is one of the main tourist attractions in the south of the country.

Ai-Ais Camp
One of the most famous hot-spring resorts in the country. The name is a Khoekhoen word which can be translated as ''fire water''. The area was discovered in 1850 by a local Nama shepherd. During Nama uprising of 1903-07 the spring was used by German military forces as a base camp. They were also using this area in 1915 as a base to recover from wounds during invasion of South African troops. Later the spring was leased to local entrepreneur and proclaimed a national monument in 1962. In 1969 it became a conservation area.

Namib Naukluft Park
Sandwiched between two deserts – the Namib in the west and the Kalahari in the east – Namibia’s arid southern region offers breathtaking landscapes.

The Namib-Naukluft Park is Namibia’s most versatile conservation area and one of the country’s major tourist destinations. The vast wilderness of almost 50,000 square km contains key features such as Sossusvlei, Sesriem, the Welwitschia Trail, Sandwich Harbour, the Naukluft Mountains and the Kuiseb Canyon. This vast tract of land covering an area the size of Germany, consists of dunes (some of which at Sossusvlei are amongst the highest in the world), gravel plains and rugged mountainous areas.

Sossus Dune Lodge
Built in an environmentally sensitive manner, primarily from wood, canvas and thatch, in an attractive ‘afro-village’ style, Sossus Dune Lodge will offer guests an evocative and life changing experience.

Situated within the park, guests will benefit from being able to reach Sossusvlei before sunrise, and to stay until after sunset, and on their return after an exhilarating day, to relax in the tranquility and splendor of the Namib Desert, under the spectacular African sky. Sossus Dune Lodge offers professional guided tours, to fully unleash the beauty and biological diversity of the desert environment to visitors, and is poised to offer the best beds in the desert.

● Bar

Honeymoon Chalet LDB&B + Park fees pp night R2500.00

Notes from Chameleon Holidays - a remarkable improvement of many of the previous NWR camps - the service and accommodation are excellent along with knowledgeable guides.  The added benefit of being at Sossus Dune Lodge is being within the National Park itself.  Therefore, particularly for self drive guests you are able to stay at Sossusvlei much longer - in fact you can stay all night if you wish and are not restricted to the park gate opening and closing hours.  A recommended option

Sesriem Campsite
At the entry to Sossusvlei is Sesriem Canyon, where centuries of erosion have incised a narrow gorge about 1 km in length. At the foot of the gorge, which plunges down to 30 to 40 m, are pools that become replenished after good rains. Sesriem derives its name from the time when earlier pioneers tied six lengths of rawhide thongs (riem) together to draw water from the pools. Camping at Sesriem gives the visitor excellent access to the Sossusvlei area.

Naukluft Campsite
Situated in the Naukluft section of the Namib-Naukluft Park, the Naukluft campsite offers an idyllic setting, under shady trees, and along the banks of a stream.  Naukluft has what is generally considered one of the toughest hiking trails, but for those less adventurous, even short walks in the vicinity of the campsite are rewarding, as there are mountain pools close by.

The Naukluft section of the park was created to serve as a sanctuary for Hartmann's mountain zebra, which are endemic to Namibia.  Other wildlife includes kudu, gemsbok, klipspringer, duiker, steenbok, leopard, baboon, black-backed jackal, bat-eared fox, African wild cat, caracal and aardwolf.  Naukluft’s steep cliffs are nesting grounds for various cliff-breeding bird species, including Black eagles. Five different vegetation communities within the park ensure a wealth of tree and shrub species, and a variety of aloes.

With its massive and varied rock formations, Naukluft is a geologist's paradise. The intermittent layers of horizontally folded igneous rock, quartzite, dolomite and shale are impressive with their giant symmetrical patterns.

Waterberg Plateau Park
Waterberg Plateau Park is a national park in central Namibia encompassing the Waterberg Plateau, 68 km east of the town of Otjiwarongo. The Waterberg Plateau is a particularly prominent feature, elevated high above the plains of the Kalahari of Eastern Namibia. The plateau and some 405 km² of surrounding land were declared a Nature Reserve in 1972. The plateau is largely inaccessible so in the early 1970s several of Namibia's endangered species were translocated there to protect them from predators and poaching to extinction. The programme was very successful and Waterberg now supplies other Namibian parks with rare species. In 1989, Black Rhino were reintroduced to the area from Damaraland, sparking a successful breeding programme of national and international significance for the species.

Waterberg Camp
Waterberg Camp is the gateway to the Waterberg Plateau Park, one of the most spectacular features of the northern region, towering some 200 meters above the surrounding landscape, with sheer cliffs and fascinating rock formations.
The Waterberg Camp has recently been re-developed. Accomodation is provided in comfortable premier bush chalets, two and four bed bush chalets and double rooms, all nestled along the base of the Waterberg Plateau cliffs, amongst towering trees.
