Desert Sleep-Out Horse Riding Safari (1-3nights)

Imagine sleeping out in the Namib Desert, under huge star-filled skies, listening to the sounds of the bush... now add that with some horse riding and you have one of the best options of exploring the desert.

The below itinerary only allows for the trip and we recommend a little extra time to allow for accommodation at the end of the trip though it can be done in a short period of time if need be.  Drive from Windhoek/Swakopmund is approximately 5 hours.

 End of the day

Desert horse sleepout - camping style

Horse riding sleepout - overnight camp - saddles and view

Day 1
Arrive at the lodge in the desert in the afternoon / lunch time (depending on the time you set out).  You'll have the opportunity to catch your breath or perhaps relax by the pool and later this afternoon meet your horse for the first time.  Care is taken to ensure you are matched to a horse that will ensure you have a great ride whether you are a beginner or advanced rider.  From here we will ride out into the desert for our first night under the stars. Depending on how many nights we are spending in the desert will depend on where our camp is based but you can be assured it will be a beautiful spot.  The camp will be set up prior to your arrival and a drink will soon be handed to you.  The grooms then take and care for your horse while you relax.  A bush toilet and shower will have been erected so you can freshen up and later a tasty dinner is heated over the fire and served under a canopy of stars.

Day 2
The day starts as and when you wake up. Enjoy freshly brewed coffee and breakfast cooked on the fire, after which set off on the first stage of the riding for the day. Late morning we'll stop for tea and the horses are fed and watered. Hammocksare strung between trees, or perhaps a camp bed is ready for you and you can relax until  mid afternoon. A picnic lunch is enjoyed with chilled white wine.   We set off for our afternoon riding, eventually ending up at their new camp for the evening. Dinner once again under the stars.(Please note that if you are on one night ride you will return to the lodge).  The ride today will often take you through a variation of terrain, from grassy plains with the backdrop of mountains, through dry river beds and through rocky gorges and hills.  There's plenty of opportunity to canter or gallop as well as simply relax and enjoy what the beauty of nature has given to this truly remarkable area.

Day 3
The next morning after the usual scrumptious breakfast we'll make our way back to the stables arriving back at the lodge around mid morning and you can continue your journey or perhaps spend a night in the lodge.  If you stay, this afternoon we are accompanied by a guide and taken on a nature drive on the property, which includes a short walk at the end of the drive up to the highest viewpoint in the area, for a 360 degree view of the area. A good night's rest in their chalet follows a three-course dinner at the lodge with some fine wines and you continue your journey.

Note - from Jules, Chameleon Holidays -
I have just returned from thoroughly enjoying a 2 night riding trip into the desert and can wholeheartedly recommend the experience.  Horses are well trained, equipment is comfortable and in good condition, and the guides friendly and capable.  Behind the scenes the organisation went without a hitch with good communication to ensure camps were set up for our arrival and horses well tended to.  Meals were delicious and far better than anticipated.  Put this together with superb riding conditions, the beauty of the Namibian desert and you're guaranteed to have a fantastic time.  I particularly recommend 2 nights in the desert to enjoy the variety of terrain and the full day riding.  Ideal for clients wishing to incorporate riding into part of a self drive or guided safari
