The Brandberg is the highest mountain in Namibia and is situated in the Namib desert which is about 80 million years old. At the foot of the Brandberg and flowing through this, the oldest desert in the world, is the Ugab River from where the Brandberg rises to 2606 m above sea level.
Situated in the Damaraland region, this magnificent mountain is made of granite which contains the mineral Feldspar, giving this monolith and the surrounding hills a redish hue at sunset and sunrise.
The Brandberg region is adorned with some of the most beautiful desert Flora and is home to Namibia's national plant. the Welwitchia. This plant which is usually found growing on flat desert ground, can amazingly be seen hanging from the cliffs surrounding the Ugab River at the foot of the Brandberg. The Welwitchia Mirabilis is said to be the oldest living plant in the world and is one of the strangest plants known to science.
In the rainy season you will be surprised to find that beautiful green plants and colorful flowers sprout from the warm Namib sand. In some cases, the larger trees seem to be growing from the rocks
The Namib desert also hosts a plant known as the Euphorbia bush, which in the 20th century, gave rise to a rather unusual tragedy. Sixteen travelers were on their way to the coast when the ran low on fuel and decided to camp for the night. They gathered branches from dead euphorbia bushes to make a fire and cook some food.
After dinner they went to bed, only to never wake up the next morning. the smoke had poisoned their food and they all died in their sleep. Their graves can still be seen in the nearby town of Uis
Despite hot, dry and arid conditions, the region hosts a wide variety of wildlife, including the famous desert Elephant.
Springbok, Oryx, Zebra & Ostrich can also be seen in the most of the region. On some of our trips you even have a chance of seeing the rare Black Rhino. For birdwatchers, Damaraland has a large variety of bird species
Damaraland also has breathtaking rock formations which was caused by wind over hundreds of years.
The Brandberg is probably best known for its rock paintings, especially the "White Lady". These paintings were made hundreds of years ago by Bushmen or the San people who inhabited the area at the time. The White Lady is particularly interesting, in that there is no known record of whites having entered the region at the time that it was painted. it was only discovered in 1918 and is of our most popular tourist attractions.
There is a variety of accommodations to choose from, ranging from normal camping sites to family tents, luxury tents and luxury Chalets.
Brandberg White Lady Lodge lies at the foot of the Brandberg
