Activities In Namibia

Namibia is a great activity destination - whether you are looking for horse riding, quad biking, hiking etc there is plenty of options to chose from and many lodges offer a selection of activities as extras.

In addition to this Swakopmund is often regarded as the activity centre of Namibia - the list is lengthy and includes sand boarding, quad biking, sky diving, fishing, dolphin cruises and various day trips into the desert.

Listed below is some of the main activities that you can enjoy and where you can enjoy them.

Hot Air Ballooning
A highly recommended experience over the Namib Desert - for those in the Sesriem/Sossusvlei region you can drift over the dunes, mountains and plains over the desert carried along by the wind.  Taking off at sunrise you lift effortlessly and apart from the occasional roar of the burner the balloon is enveloped in silence.  After an hours flight you will land gently and enjoy a champagne breakfast in the heart of the desert before returning to your lodge.  N$3950/person
Flights are undertaken from Namib-Naukluft Park as well as in the north of the NamibRand Nature Reserve most mornings - weather permitting.

Hiking
There are several options of trails to choose from as well as numerous day trips, again many private lodge establishments have hiking trails on their land, please visit the hiking page for more details.

Horse Riding

There are many horse riding options particularly for established riders varying from afternoon sunset rides for just 2 hours to 14 day trips through the heart of the country.  Again, there are several lodges that offer horse riding as an optional activity, please visit the main horse riding section on our website or contact us for details

Sand boarding

An all round fun activity for kids and adults alike - choose from lie down sandboarding (picture lying down on your belly facing forward and hurtling down a sand dune at 70km per hour - yup, this is it), or stand up - similar to snow boarding.  No previous experience is needed and pick up/drop off in Swakopmund is included. A morning activity on the dunes of Swakopmund and lunch included
N$200-N$300/person

Quad biking
An undeniably fun and exhilarating activity.  You can join this as an optional activity in Swakopmund, or again there are several lodges that offer this (for example Le Mirage, Serra Cafema Camp and many more).  Normally a two hour guided activity running between 9am-sunset the route is about 55km and takes you along the Swakop riverbed, across the plains and then ultimately through the dune field crossing the dunes from teh eastern ridge and winding your way through to the western ridge.   Great views, and varied sand dunes and river beds are the order of the day.  Safety is paramount so all riders are given helmets and a full safety briefing is compulsory.  Automatic, sem-auto and manual bikes available.
N$450/person

Note - In Swakopmund the activity runs on the dune belt just off from Swakopmund  the operators we use in designated areas and do their best to help protect the land but as a visitor to the country please be aware of unlicenced operations that can have a negative impact on the environment by not utilising established tracks and driving over precious lichen fields creating long term damage.  As a tourist - please also act responsibly.

Tandem Skydive

After a safety briefing, a scenic flight takes you up, up, up... You must jump you know and no words can describe the incredible rush when the wind crashes around you and you throw yourself out of a plane (this must be madness!) thankfully attached to an experienced instructor.  From here you freefall for 30 sec at 220km/h twisting and turning before your parachute opens and you drift peacefully to the ground, enjoying the views then landing in front of the clubhouse..
N$1950/person

Dolphin Cruise
Trips run daily and in the mornings from Walvis Bay.  A knowledgeable local skipper will take you out on a boat giving you historical information on Swakopmund and Walvis Bay.  You'll visit a seal colony where sometimes the occasional seal will jump onto the boat for a hug or fish to eat.  You are also lucky enough to see dolphins and possibly whales (seasonal).  Includes transfers, drinks and snacks
N$450/person

Scenic Flights

A whole plethoria of options are available for those after a scenic - you can choose from day trips to the far north or south of the country for those on limited time that wish to see some of the wonderful sights, or a scenic flight that will take you over the dunes, ocean, shipwrecks and diamond mines.  Prices vary accordingly to the flight and amount of people flying.

City & Township tours                                                                                                                                                        Katutura meaning "a place where we do not want to live" in Otjiherero, was declared a township for local indigenous people in 1959 during apartheid era. Before that the local indigenous people used to live in a location, which today we call Hochland Park. The decision to dislocate the people to Katutura was greatly opposed for practical and logical reasons, but the decision was made and th people had to move. Find out the history and background of this lively township, which people today call "a place where we want to live". This tour is very informative and educational. You will visit places of inerest such as the Lover's Hill, Parlament Gardens; Kristus-Kirche; Old location cemetery; Katutura open market; Informal settlement, shebeen and Penduka Women project. N$200.00 PP excluding drinks at the shebeen [2008 Rates]
