If you fancy driving yourself around then a car hire is an ideal way to do this allowing you the freedom and pace. If you are wanting a "self-drive" itinerary then car hire is automatically included (along with accommodation bookings), however, if you prefer you can hire a car and make your own bookings as you go along (not ideal in high season). We use reputable companies in Namibia, South Africa and Botswana - check out in the appropriate country for types of cars available.
Some things to bear in mind
- Driving in Southern Africa is very different to driving in your home country - we drive on the left hand side for example - many roads are gravel, some will have an assortment of animals crossing so whilst there may not be the same volume of traffic there are other obstacles to overcome.
- We do not recommend you drive at night if in the bush due to the amount of animals that can leap in front of you and create an accident
- Consider the amount of people travelling in the vehicle - are you camping or staying in a lodge and hire a vehicle that is suitable for the destinations you are driving to
- Cars are hired with either an excess or zero excess - essentially this means that you are liable for damage to the amount of the excess (this can include undercarriage damage etc), remember that whilst you may save a little money on the car hire initially it is false economy if you are overloaded and damage the vehicle and have to pay for it
- You will need an international driving licence or one written in English and carry it with you when driving
- All countries in Southern Africa are huge and whilst on the map distances may look small they can be a long drive away. Don't under estimate driving times
- Plan your trip realistically!
