When To Go To Botswana

The seasons in the southern hemisphere are reverse to those in the northern hemisphere, causing midsummer to occur in December - January.

The dry season (May to November) is often regarded as the easiest time to travel as the skies are likely to be clear and sunny and the liklihood of rain is minimal and therefore less likely to impact on travel plans.  It is also Winter time and temperatures can plummet - the desert can often reach freezing or occasionally below.  From September, the days stretch out and become considerably warmer until October when temps in the pans can hit 40c and the built up to the rains start.

Although Okavango Delta can be visited all year round, the dry season in May to November is the best time to watch larger herds as they more often gather at the water sources during that period. During this dry period the buffalo and elephant herds can grow to large proportions. Temperatures as less extreme than in the desert year round

During the rainy season in November to April, the rainfall makes the Okavango plains green, the temperatures are higher and even though the game is more dispersed the country looks beautiful and the birding is at it's best. Prices are generally lower during this green season and superb offers are available.  The wet season can vary hugely, some days dry with beautiful clear blue skies and others constantly wet with endless grey days.  In these heavy rainfall years it may mean that certain roads become unpassable and can be a challenge for any self driver or any pre-arranged trip, all travellers that want to visit during this time need to be aware that the rain can prevent trips from running or at least amendments to their itineraries.
When the floodwater from Angola arrives in May to August, the usually dry channels fill up creating crystal clear, interlocking streams and lagoons teaming with wildlife.

Ultimately, as with any Southern African country, travelling often comes down to a suitable time for the visitor and every season is stunning to visit.
