Is it our imagination or can you really see the curve of the earth here - it certainly seems so. San Camp sits serenely in amongst palms on what appears to be the edge of the world. It's the complete desert experience focusing on species unique to the area such as aardvark, oryx and springbok - plus a host of others. A simple, but totally luxurious camp with bucket showers, flush loos, four-poster beds, mosquito net canopies, percale sheets, and paraffin lamps. There is no electricity at San Camp. Six white canvas tents twinned with a dramatic location, combine to create an oasis of civilization in what can be the harshest of stark environments, yet elegance and romance abounds...
San Camp is unique in that it is one of only two permanent camps to offer a chance to explore and understand the Kalahari. The concession adjoins the Makgadikgadi National Park with its endless vistas of rolling golden grasslands. Desert palms line the horizon… Through the tent flaps, the Makgadikgadi Pans run over the horizon like the mother of all Norfolk beaches (yes, that Norfolk)!
Activities include - venturing onto the Makgadikgadi on quad bikes to explore remote archaeological sites, fossil beds of ancient extinct giant zebra and hippo (yup, they really did exist).. There's not a great deal here - just lots of shall we say - nothingness.. no outcrops, no features, no grass, no trees, no sound but the crunch of your boots in the crust of the pan..sublime - a rea "get away from it" all type of place
