Mid-Range Accommodation In The Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is one of the most famous regions in Southern Africa and there is a considerable amount of choice of accommodation in the Delta region.  To fully appreciate the Delta and all the beauty it holds, visitors really need to have a trip on a "mokoro" (dug out canoe).  If finances permit then its best to allow 2 nights in at least two camps in different regions, alternatively, then try for a region that can offer both land and water based activities for 3 nights.  Below is just a selection and certainly not all that's available.

Kwando Lagoon Camp

Shaded under massive African Ebony trees, situated centrally, in the extensive Kwando wilderness of 232 000 ha. (550 000 acres) is Kwando Lagoon Camp.  Kwando Lagoon Camp comprises 8 spacious purpose designed tents with views over the private lagoon formed by the ever-changing Kwando River.  Each tent comprises a bedroom area with a spacious bathroom en suite. The bathroom has a double basin set in an indigenous Mukwa wood stand and a flush loo.  The spacious outdoor reeded showers capture the essence of Africa that is Kwando.

Guests arrive from the airstrip through open plains, into our shaded reception area and amble into the peaceful lounge, dinning and bar area, under thatch.  They continue through the thatched dinning area onto the pathways leading to their personal hideaway and tent.  Their view is of expansive Africa over the peaceful lagoon and reedbeds, that lead to the Kwando-Linyanti flood plain system.  This system is an intricate labyrinth of waterways, reedbeds, islands, floodplains, bush, scrub and trees.  However, the river system around Lagoon camp is a maze of ox bow lakes, fossil riverbeds, reedbeds and riverine forests.General game graze on the wide flood plains, in spectacular scenery under the ever-watchful scrutiny of predators.  Lagoon offers regular and reliable sightings of elephant, lion, wild dog, leopard, cheetah, giraffe, zebra, tsessebe, impala, wildebeest, buffalo and waterbuck in stunning settings.  Sudden lines of tall lead wood trees demarcate the flood plains, many hundreds of years old. Shady grasslands give way to the striking silver cluster leaf woodlands, that are tended by the elephant, maintaining the characteristic: broken gardens effect. West of the floodplains are the endless mopane woodlands, that sustain the large herds in the wet season.

Kwara Camp

Situated on the edge of the permanent waters of the world renowned Okavango Delta in Botswana, and shares a common boundary with Moremi Game Reserve.  Due to the specific location of the camp, Kwara is able to offer, power boating, mekoro (dug out canoe) trips, walks and game drives – all year round.  In addition Kwara is in a large private concession enabling the game drives to operate both off road and at night.  The spectacular scenery with scattered herds of plains game and the ever-attendant predators helps to enhance your safari.  Due to the labyrinth of waterways, islands, seasonal flood plains and bush, Kwara is always interesting and varied.  Taking a morning mekoro trip, moving silently through the flood plains is a memorable experience and the highlight for many.  The trip is broken by an island visit where guests rest in the shade of the large trees while surveying the surrounding delta waters and lagoons.  After the refreshment break our trained and armed polers take you on a guided walk on the island before your relaxing return to camp by mokoro.

Pom Pom Camp

The Camp is located on Pom Pom Island in a private concession situated in the heart of the Okavango Delta and on the head waters of the Xudum river system.  The area lies on the western boundary of the Moremi Game Reserve and offers superb Okavango scenery and a true Okavango wilderness experience. Accommodation consists of nine luxury safari tents in true traditional safari style, all with full en-suite semi open ablution facilities. The main building is attractively designed and constructed of thatch and canvas and comprises lounge, dining, bar and pool areas, as well as a gift shop and the boma area. The Camp is set under a grove of shady trees and overlooks a beautiful lagoon enhancing the already spectacular Okavango sunsets. Activities include game drives, night drives, mokoro trips and walks where you may encounter game such as lion, elephant, hyena, giraffe, zebra and plenty more. Game viewing is of the best offered in the Delta. Guests have the opportunity of seeing all major predators, a variety of big game and plains game, as well as an abundance of bird life.
Chameleon note - we recently visited this camp and it quickly became a firm favourite as it has great ambience, excellent food and friendly, efficient staff.
